The Roman Catholic Society of Medicine is a professional society for Catholic healthcare professionals and students. It exists to promote excellence in healthcare, ethical practice grounded in Catholic teaching, professional development, and faithful service in medicine and allied health fields.

The Society exists to:

• Promote ethical healthcare practice grounded in Catholic moral teaching and the dignity of the human person

• Issue reflections and consensus statements on moral and ethical issues arising in clinical practice

• Support Catholic healthcare professionals, students, and support workers in situations of moral conflict or professional tension

• Provide spiritual and pastoral support to those experiencing moral distress or difficult clinical experiences

• Encourage formation, education, and professional excellence within healthcare professions

• Foster fellowship, mutual support, and shared reflection among Catholic clinicians, students, support staff, and clergy

Who can join?

Membership is open to baptised and confirmed Catholics working or training in healthcare, including medicine, nursing, paramedicine, allied health professions, dentistry, and related fields.

Non-Catholics may only be admitted through Honorary Membership, where the Governing Body recognises significant contribution to healthcare or alignment with the Society’s values.

Yes. Ordinary membership requires a profession of the Catholic faith. The only exception is Honorary Membership, which may be granted at the discretion of the Governing Body.

Yes. Catholic students studying healthcare-related courses may apply for Associate Membership (ARCSMed).

No. The Society does not provide clinical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Individuals should always seek care from appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.

The Society is founded on Catholic teaching and exists in fidelity to it. Any formal ecclesiastical recognition or affiliation, if applicable, will be explicitly stated.
